Elizabeth Murton - Artist Residency

Liz is a conceptual artist based in St Albans, she trained in textiles and is exploring warp-weighted looms. This brought her here to The Ceramics Studio in deepest Warwickshire to make some ceramic weights.

My art practice explores the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the complicated and awe-inspiring world we live in – whether through religion, philosophy or science. This tension is expressed in the materials used, whether taut threads of yarn in Between Materials and Mechanisms, (2016), like a loom under tension, or unravelling structures in in development, (2008).

Over the period of a year, Liz came and experimented, completed and glazed a whole body of work which became her warp-weight loom project.

I met Liz in Deptford in 2009, we were part of the Core Blimey studios on Creekside. Great days, making art and putting on shows. Despite us both moving out of London we have kept in touch and I was delighted when Liz asked to come and make some ceramics.

We had lots to work through, starting with the basic making techniques, discuss what thickness of clay were safe for firing and what would be too venerable to fire. Liz actually managed to make a spiders web with extrusions! We explored how to glaze the weights so they were covered all over and experimenting safely with colours.

Check out Liz’s Instagram for the results - she has made the most beautiful warp-weighted loom.
